At Hastings Manufacturing, we know piston rings, and want to pass that knowledge on to you. In this video we’re going to cover different ring coatings so you’ll know which coating your piston rings have.
The cast ring will be black in color on all surfaces.
A moly coated ring will have a shiny grey OD.
While a chrome coated ring will have a shiny silver OD.
To know which coating your set has, look at the part number. If there’s no prefix, they’re cast iron top rings. 2M means moly inlay top rings. And 2C means chrome.
Coatings can either be moly filled or chrome plated, but not both.
Some people ask if their ring sets are double Moly, meaning top and second groove, but only the top ring in the set is Moly filled.
And lastly, some people don’t want a Chrome ring set in that they never “seat,” but Chrome rings are "pre-seated" before leaving the factory. Proper finish of the cylinder wall for Chrome rings—220 to 280 Grit stone—will insure a better and faster seating of the rings.
